Cats: The Masters of Hiding Illness

CAT LOVERS ALERT! Cats can be very deceptive. It is their nature to hide their illnesses and injuries. One of the easiest things to miss is weight loss. Another thing that is easy to miss is a change in their appetite. This is especially true if you free feed your cat or have multiple cats eating together. Subtle changes are hard to catch. My 12 year old cat, Milo, lost 2.5 pounds in about 6 months. I did not catch it right away. He started eating less, but my other cat was eating what he didn’t. I finally realized what was happening when I noticed Milo’s weight loss. I brought him to River’s Edge Veterinary Hospital for an exam, radiographs, and blood and urine tests. He is being treated and is maintaining his weight for now. He is not easy to medicate, but that is another story! Watch your sneaky cats. Check their eating habits, litter box habits, and weight regularly. Catching changes early  can make a big difference in your cat’s quality of life and longevity.
