Rat and Mouse Poison---A bad idea.

As fall comes, there are many rodents that are looking for warm places to live. Our homes, garages, barns, and sheds are great places for them. None of us like these pests around, least of all me. I have two barn cats that love to catch these rodents. Sometimes they eat them (YUCK!), and sometimes they bring them to my door as a trophy for me to see (DOUBLE YUCK!).

Even though I hate these rodents, I never put out any kind of mouse or rat poison. I don’t want to take the chance that my cats will eat the poison. I also don’t want them to eat a mouse that has eaten the poison. That can be just as deadly.

Even though I am talking about my cats, dogs are just as likely to eat the poison, too. It is just as lethal for them. When I first started in the veterinary business, we were able to safely treat pets with Vitamin K. These days, some of the poisons work differently and are not as easily treatable. The other thing we need to remember is that we may not know that our pet has eaten the poison until it is too late. By the time your pet shows symptoms of the poison, it may be too late for us to save them.

There are the tried and true mouse traps out there that have been used for years, but there are some new ones out there, too. Find the ones that work for you, and skip the poison.
